Uniper and British Salt to explore hydrogen storage

The Salinae Hydrogen Storage project is a potential salt cavern hydrogen storage facility, near Warmingham in Cheshire, UK. Uniper company are working on the project in partnership with British Salt who own the mineral rights and have existing operations on the site. The two companies have recently signed a feasibility development agreement which gives Uniper the sole rights to explore the site’s potential for hydrogen storage.
Along with existing gas storage, this project has the potential to play a key role in ensuring a secure and flexible energy system in the UK.
Hydrogen is a key fuel for industries that are difficult to electrify, such as chemicals and refining, steelmaking, cement production, and transport. Uniper are developing a hydrogen portfolio with the aim of a long-term transition, and as part of this, are exploring the potential for hydrogen storage with a number of projects, in the UK and Germany.
